About The Event

Top Premiership footballers (Past and Present) will compete at the Belfry, to find out who is the best golfer.

2 players from each Premiership club (Past and Present) will play 18 holes and battle to win the ‘Breakthrough Cup’ each year.

The first event took place on Sunday 16th May 2010 and raised profile and funds for the charity ‘Breakthrough Breast Cancer’.

Breakthrough is a pioneering charity dedicated to the prevention, treatment and ultimate eradication of breast cancer.

The money raised at the ‘Breakthrough Cup’ will help Breakthrough fight breast cancer on three fronts – research, campaigning and education. Through this work the charity believes passionately that the disease can be beaten and the fear of breast cancer removed for good.
Golfer, Darren Clarke, launched the ‘Breakthrough Cup’ on Thursday 10th Dec 2009 at the Belfry.

Darren’s wife, Heather, died in August 2006 at London’s Royal Marsden Hospital after a long battle with breast cancer.

At the time of his wife’s death Darren said: “Heather’s courage and bravery throughout the last two years when she was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer has been an inspiration.”
Darren Clarke is a major supporter of breast cancer research and is happy to support the ‘Breakthrough Cup’ golf tournament:

“I am passionate about breast cancer research and am pleased to be involved with this event. There is a strong relationship between football and golf and I, for one, am looking forward to finding out who the best Premiership golfer is. Hopefully, we will raise lots of money and profile for breast cancer research.”

Breakthrough Breast Cancer is a registered charity in England & Wales (No. 1062636) and Scotland (No. SC039058)
